Step-by-Step Solar Panel Installation Process

01

Site Survey & Load Calculation

Before installation, a detailed physical site survey is conducted to assess roof health, shading patterns, and historical energy consumption. Engineers calculate the total connected load to determine the optimal system capacity required.

02

System Design & Component Selection

Using industrial software like PVsyst or Helioscope, engineers create a precise 3D layout and stringing plan. Selection of modules and inverters is based on efficiency, local climate conditions, and budget.

03

Obtaining Permits & DISCOM Approval

The project moves through official channels for feasibility approval from the local DISCOM. This ensures the grid is capable of handling the solar injection and complies with state-specific net metering policies.

04

Mounting Structure Installation

High-quality galvanized iron or aluminum structures are anchored to the roof. The tilt and azimuth are precisely set (typically 10° to 25° in India) to maximize annual solar harvest.

05

Solar Panel Mounting

Photovoltaic modules are securely bolted to the structure using mid-clamps and end-clamps. This stage ensures the array is robust enough to withstand high wind speeds and monsoon rains.

06

Inverter & Battery Installation

The DC output from the panels is routed to a solar inverter (and battery bank for hybrid/off-grid systems). The inverter converts solar energy into usable AC power for the household or grid.

07

Electrical Wiring & Safety Checks

Wiring is executed using UV-resistant DC cables and housed in IP65-rated junction boxes. Strict adherence to MNRE standards ensures system safety, including earthing and lightning protection.

08

Grid Connection & Commissioning

The final stage involves installing the bidirectional net meter and synchronizing with the grid. Once commissioned, the system begins generating clean energy and reducing electricity bills.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard residential installation typically takes 2–4 days for the physical mounting and wiring, though the full process including DISCOM approvals and net meter installation can take 4–8 weeks.

Yes, grid-connected systems require feasibility approval from your local DISCOM and a registered electrical supervisor’s certification. For subsidy-linked projects under PM Surya Ghar, registration on the national portal is mandatory.

Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy owners for the electricity they add to the grid. Under PM Surya Ghar, this ensures your subsidy eligibility and reduces your monthly DISCOM bills significantly.

While physical mounting is possible, Indian electrical codes and DISCOM policies require all grid-tied systems to be installed and certified by licensed professionals for safety and subsidy eligibility.

Most EPC companies prefer candidates with a B.E./B.Tech in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical engineering, supplemented by a specialized PG Diploma in Solar Technology for hands-on software and site skills.

Helioscope is generally easier for beginners to master for preliminary design and shading, while PVsyst is the global industry standard for bankable yield reports and utility-scale sizing. IISE’s curriculum covers both.
